Kitchen Renovation

Today we learn more about kitchens & the top tips to think about renovating your dream home in Sydney. As a Colour & Decor Consultant for over 20 years I have come across many different kitchen styles and helped turn them into something amazing.

My top tips for renovating your kitchen:

  • Do your research on products and finishes

  • Visit kitchen showrooms to get an idea on products and the different types of doors, bench tops and splash backs

  • Only get quotes when your research is complete and you know exactly what type of products you want, so that you can compare quotes fairly, it’s best to get 3 quotes.

  • Remember it’s not only about cost it’s about the company’s reputation, the design the timeframe for completion and a streamline process, also workmanship and the warranty eg. 10 years.

  • Flooring - If you are replacing your flooring this can be installed first before the kitchen is installed.depending on what type of flooring you choose. Check with your floor stockist. Note: The kitchen can be installed over the flooring not around it, if it is tiles depending on the condition of the floor, its important to check with your tiler for advice and also the kitchen company for the best advice regarding the flooring. If you choose a floating floor it will be installed after the kitchen is installed.

  • The colour and type of the flooring must be chosen first before you choose your kitchen colours. Its harder to pick your floor type and colour.

  • Kitchen Bench top - Choose your kitchen bench top first before you choose your door colour.

  • Engineered Stone - If you are choosing engineered stone eg.CaesarStone or Quantum Quartz these stones come in 4-5 different price ranges discuss this with your kitchen designer.

  • I’d highly recommend that you visit the company’s showroom of the stone of your choice to look at a large slab or a kitchen company with the stone colour installed in a kitchen. Slabs look very different to a small sample.

  • The colour and pattern of the stone can look remarkably different in a larger expanse Also the stone colour can look different in your kitchen due to artificial and natural light. Always ask for a sample of the colour

  • Kitchen Doors – if you have chosen polyurethane you can select any Dulux Colour (Bunnings stores have a large range of samples of Dulux colours that you can choose from) www.dulux.com.au

  • Door Finish -Polyurethane generally comes in Satin or Gloss depending on the kitchen company that you choose and the finishes that they supply. Satin generally is 30% sheen level check with your kitchen company before signing your contract.

  • Door Type -Choose your door type square form, bevelled edge, profile doors with routed edges in various styles eg.Country look or French Provincial. These can be viewed at most kitchen showrooms.

  • Splash back – Can be in various products either Glass, Tile or Stone. The least expensive is Tile these can be 600x300 or 600x600 in Porcelain in matt or gloss or ceramic subway tiles in 300x100 or 100x200 in matt or gloss. Each finish gives a different look, for continuity of bench top to splash back go stone the same as the bench top this is the least amount of maintenance. For a seamless glossy look go glass, but this is harder to keep clean. Check Decoglaze website for colours www.decoglaz.com.au or visit their showroom in Sevenhills

  • Storage -Research carefully your options for a concealed bin cupboard, pantry and there are various options for the corner cupboard eg.lazy susan or shelving, so you know what special features you require for storage as this will affect the overall pricing on your quote.

  • Kickplate - you have two choices either the same as the doors (this will be laminate even if your doors are polyurathane) with a matching colour. Or Brushed aluminum to co-ordinate with your appliances if they are stainless steel.
